Businesses can gain greatly from encompassing corporate social responsibility into their operations; i.e. committing themselves to an ethical behaviour and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families, as well as of the local community and society at large. By showing awareness of the economic, social and environmental impact of their activities, businesses recognize that they are interdependent with society and as such can only sustain a profitable organization if management makes decisions and takes actions that will enhance the welfare and interests of all. Business activities that bring profit, along with economic, social and environmental benefits, contribute to sustainable development that goes beyond philanthropy. Criticism is often levelled at companies adopting a CSR policy for simply practicing a form of public relations. KMOP recognizes this tendency and strives to make CSR in our operational areas more effective, by advocating more strategically informed, multi-faceted methods that could achieve considerable progress in ethical areas, such as poverty alleviation, while bringing the company financial benefits. Simultaneously, we also work to help the society distinguish between negative and positive CSR efforts, in order to appreciate that companies can no longer neglect he social dimension of their activities. Thus combing ethical with economic improvements can be done in the best interest of society. In Europe, the promotion of CSR reflects the need to defend common values and increase the sense of solidarity and cohesion. On 22 March 2006, the European Commission published a new Communication on Corporate Social Responsibility, through which it launched the European Alliance for CSR - an umbrella network for discussion and debate on new and existing CSR initiatives by large companies, SMEs and their stakeholders. In Greece, all major enterprises show increased awareness on the issue and have demonstrated good practices of CSR regarding social and environmental issues. KMOP includes in its strategy to work in partnership with the private sector, community bodies, unions, consumers and other stakeholders to promote CRS in the Greek corporate environment.KMOP project on CSR Useful links and resources: International Chamber of Commerce’s “Business Charter for Sustainable Development” European Alliance for CSR |
