The European T.I.R. project - Two Images in Reconstruction: Maternity and Paternity. Overcoming Gender Stereotypes and Promoting Gender Equality - that was completed in 2006, took the approach that cultural changes of stereotypes can be promoted within the framework of the family, which constitutes a fundamental medium for the transmission of attitudes, values and norms shared by men and women. The methodology included background analyses, quantitative and qualitative interview with fathers on aspects of paternity, particpant observation in family settings, as well as mass media and legislation analyses of paternity in social contexts.

“The Role of Men in the Family”

Responding to the need for further research on the economic and family aspects of equal opportunities between women and men, this project is aimed at improving awareness and sensitisation on the issue of men in the family. It is undertaken through a multi-stakeholder approach by a partnership of COFACE member organisations and highlights grass-root experience in seven member states of the EU.
Analysed in different national settings, the project poses the general question of how to encourage the participation of men in their family, whether in educating and caring for their children, or caring for their elderly parents. The project also addresses the specific cases of families with disabled persons, as well as single parent families, all from a man’s perspective.
The role of KMOP in the project has been to examine Greek men’s perspective over the past decade on caring for elderly parents. Producing a qualitative survey, face-to-face interviews were carried out in both rural and urban areas.
