Care 2 Work aims to tackle the barriers faced by young carers from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups (BAME) when accessing employment, education and training. The project aims to generate and pilot new knowledge on the needs of BAME young carers with an ultimate goal of achieving institutional and cultural change in the UK and Europe and breaking the cycle of poverty and disadvantage for one of the most marginalised communities of our society. To achieve its objectives, this innovative youth-led project will develop an evidence based on the needs of BAME young carers and use it to develop and pilot accredited, youth-led training (face to face and online). The training will target young BAME carers as well as service providers and professionals.

The expected results of  Care 2 Work are:

  • Support BAME young carers to feel more empowered, self-confident and self-sufficient;
  • Support BAME young carers to enhance the skills acquired through caring, building on them so that they can improve their employability as well as their awareness and willingness to enter education and further training, and to thus preventing them from becoming NEETs;
  • Address inequalities among young people;
  • Increase awareness of employers on the skills developed by BAME young carers and their applicability in the working context and hence increase employability opportunities for our target group.

The main activities of the project involve the following:

  • Analysis of key concepts and cross country comparison;
  • Design and pilot of workshops and resources aimed to support BAME young carers to strengthen and build on the skills informally developed in caring;
  • Design and development of an e-learning tool that will allow access to a wider user base;
  • Final project report including the theoretical and practical results of the programme including its pilots, training and on the ground learning from each participating country and Europe. It will include policy recommendations and best practices for those serving young people.
