Single-parent families, most of whom consist of women, have more possibilities to live at risk of poverty and social exclusion. In 2016, the highest at-risk-of-poverty rate in the EU-28 was recorded for single persons with dependent children, at more than one third. In particular, women are affected the most, as they make up almost 85% of all one-parent families in the EU. Specifically, younger mothers and women with young children are the least-employed parent group, while the lower the mother’s level of education, the more likely to be poor. Moreover, having a job does not guarantee a decent life and an improvement in their living conditions, as more efforts are required in order single parents to acquire better skills and to facilitate their access to labor market.


ParentBank aims at facilitating the labor market integration of low-income single-parents by promoting their access to childcare and other services that may be unable to afford through the time-banking (providing services to one another) and developing their skills and entrepreneurial spirit which can improve their employment status.



Training programme for practitioners who support single parents, in the teaching of literacy, numeracy, entrepreneurial and digital skills

The training programme aims at enhancing the practitioners competences - who support low-skilled (single) parents – in teaching of numeracy, entrepreneurial and digital skills, so that they are able to foster their employability, socio-educational and personal development.

The key competences are the following: Communication competence in the mother tongue, mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology, digital competence, sense of initiative and entrepreneurship, learning to learn, social and civic competences.

Training programme for the building of literacy, numeracy, digital competences, sense of initiative, and entrepreneurial skills of low-skilled single parents

The training programme aims at enhancing the low-skilled parents competences in literacy, numeracy, sense of initiative, digital and entrepreneurial digital skills, so that they are able to foster their employability, socio-educational and personal development.

Guide for the development of time bank business plan & sustainability strategy

The guide is a clear step-by-step guide for the development of an online time bank business plan & sustainability strategy, covering all the important elements, such as: description of services to be offered, organization and management, marketing, monitoring, financial plan, strategic partnerships and sustainability etc.

Creation and piloting of single parents’ time-bank

The online time bank is managed by the trained single-parents, who will be able to exchange all kinds of services, that they cannot afford, enabling them thus to go back to work or training to find better employment etc. Through the time bank, single parents will be able to have access to childcare and other services, which can remove barriers to the labour market and contribute to social inclusion (enable them to go back to work, training).

Peer-to-peer outreach strategy

Peer-to-peer outreach strategy aims at enabling the single parents involved in the running of the online time banks to carry out awareness raising/outreach actions in order to motivate their peers to get actively involved in the online time bank communities, and/or upgrade their literacy, mathematical, digital and/or entrepreneurial skills through e-learning.
