Challenge

One type of violence currently striking children populations across Europe has to do with gender and sexuality, since many children suffer violence for being gender or sexually non-conformant. LGBTIphobia and violence against people who do not fulfil dominant gender norms affect an important part of the population throughout their whole life. Actually, discrimination because of LGBTIphobic reasons is an unacceptable violation of human dignity (article 21 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights).

Preventing LGBTIphobia at an early stage of life is key for stopping this social phenomenon and fostering the well-being of the whole society. Children education can play an important role in the elimination of violence to gender non-conforming children, as 64% of surveyed people believe that school lessons and material should include information on diversity in terms of gender identity and sexual orientation (Eurobarometer 2015). However, other spheres of life have been left overlooked, and hence there has not been a comprehensive look on the issue which can help with all spheres of life (health, family, media, public spaces).

 

Innovation

By actively engaging LGBTI and gender non-conformity children in the development of an interactive app, which will contain sensitizing information towards SOGIGE diversity in childhood, DIVERSITY aims at sensitizing and changing social behaviours towards them.

 

Action

Diagnosis of needs produced by gender-derived violence in childhood

National reports and a comparative analysis will be drafted including the needs produced by gender-derived violence in childhood, with a particular focus on LGBT children, as well as children who challenge dominant gender norms and expectations, and mapping of good practices regarding the intersection between gender and childhood in 5 key spheres: school, health, family, public spaces, and media.

The research will use qualitative techniques such as in-depth interviews addressed to stakeholders and a workshop addressed to children in general. Quantitative techniques include surveys addressed to stakeholders who live in these countries in order to analyze their perceptions, experiences and practices about sexual and gender diversity in childhood.

Interactive App with FAQ, for children and professionals

An interactive online app for children and professionals will be developed, addressed to children and teenagers from 6-18 years old for Android (free download). This will contain sensitizing information towards SOGIGE diversity in childhood, whit FAQ emerging from the workshop with children.

A handbook on addressing LGBTI and gender non-conforming children for professionals

Development of a handbook on addressing LGBTI and gender non-conforming children for professionals from different key areas: education, health, media, families and public space. The handbook will be developed in English and translated in each partner language.

Training for Professionals and Stakeholders of different areas

Trainings for professionals and stakeholders of different areas (education, health, media, families, public space) to enhance skills and competences in their respective areas in relation to assisting gender based violence towards LGBTI and gender non-conforming children. Training will be enhanced to reach a wider range of professionals and stakeholders through the creation of a four-week duration Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) open to anybody who would like to learn these tools.

Seminar with stakeholders

Organization of seminar with stakeholders to promote interagency and multidisciplinary cooperation between public bodies, NGOs and other relevant agencies working with children and gender-based violence.
