Creative Story-Tellers

Promoting children’s understanding of sustainable development through multimodal story-telling in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC)

An Erasmus+ project that uses a multimodal approach to promote sustainability education in early childhood.

GA number: 2023-1-DE03-KA220-SCH-000153097

Funded by: Erasmus+      Duration: 01/11/2023-31/10/2025

Challenge

Education has long been a key driver for change and quality education (SDG 4) is critical to the success of all 17 goals, while Education for Sustainability (EfS) is considered a fundamental part of this. The SDGs recognize children as “agents of change” and working with them is crucial to implement Early Childhood Education for Sustainability (ECEfS) to promote transformative change.

Holistic, action-oriented and participatory pedagogies and approaches are critical to achieve a sustainable world. While sustainability is becoming an integral part of ECEC in some countries, in many other EU countries it is not embedded into the learning curricula.

Innovation

The Creative Story-Tellers (CST) project aims at implementing activities that allow rhizomatic* learning processes through multimodal (digital) story-telling on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) topics that include personalised arts-based expressions of the way creators view themselves and the world around them.

* a non-linear, interconnected, and decentralized way of thinking, learning, or organizing information

Action

This aims to identify opportunities for the integration of SDGs into the curricula and pedagogical plans and framework and develop a pedagogical concept, based on multimodal (digital) story-telling.

A training programme to enhance educators’ expertise on SDGs; story-telling techniques and supportive digital tools; useful learning practices, resources, tools, and methods; as well as practical advice in up to 10 separate workshops.

It will produce an educator “toolkit” with innovative, creative, tailored and attractive educational resources to facilitate the Creative Story-Tellers Co-Design Labs. It includes ideas for creative experiential learning activities to be carried out by the children, as well as how to engage and involve their parents and cooperate with external partners and experts. The engagement of the parents will extend the awareness of the SDGs to the children’s familial environment, and provide additional motivation to create and present their creative stories.
