Studies estimate that by 2060 at least one in three Europeans will be over 65. The European Commission argues that digital technology can help older people stay healthy, independent and active at work or in their community, and improve their quality of life. Since May 2015, when the EC adopted the Digital Single Market strategy, several studies have identified the lack of digital skills among the elderly.

There is a strong need to educate EU citizens and the elderly on how to access and engage in online activities with a high level of consumer and personal data protection. Elderly people, in particular, often feel security anxiety captured by internet safety perceptions and fear of, among others, possible misuse of their credit cards when entering data online. They are not aware of the safety processes that need to be followed or of internet security threats, control measures and safeguards to their devices.

Καινοτομία

The e-Protect project aims to address the consumer and data protection needs during internet use of the elderly people, through the familiarisation with ICT tools and provision of tailored training, enhancing the capacity and professionalisation of adult educators with training material, improving the overall quality of adult education for the elderly, and reducing the inequalities in access in education for elderly.

Δράσεις

Partners will work with researchers, practitioners, adult educators and elderly people for the synthesis and translation of the innovative training course to be delivered to the elderly (aged +65). Special emphasis will be placed on gathering input from the elderly people to map competencies and create a useful evaluation tool for defining the level of these competencies for consumer and data protection among the elderly.

The e-Protect curricula will map internet safety competencies in regards to consumer and personal data protection, providing in detail the description of learning outcomes in terms of knowledge and skills, describing each competence and its value for elderly people. Curricula will be developed and provided by deploying the latest developments in educational technology and will focus on improving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the elderly by taking into account physical or mental restrictions.

The e-Protect Train-the-Trainer Toolkit will support the capacity building for the implementation of the innovative training programme. Partners will be prompted to quality improvement followed by peer-to-peer reviews by experts in the field. The Toolkit will be accessible through the project website and will be freely available for download.

An e-learning space will be developed with content specifically related to internet safety skills for the elderly. The e-learning space will enable easy access to all interested stakeholders and will consist of rich informational resources and data.

In September 2022, the final conference will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, as well as three national events in Greece, Ireland and France.
