EmpoweringYou – Empowerment of young EU citizens through a gamified virtual collaboration platform for political and civic participation

Challenge
According to recent EU statistics (2014 Youth Report Inforgraphics), only 63% of young people participate in elections, resulting in the political, civic and social exclusion of youth at local, regional, national and European level.
In the UK and Cyprus, the percentage of young citizens participating in elections accounts for only 45% and 47% respectively, whereas in Spain and Italy, the participating youngsters in elections account for 65%. Greece seems to have a higher participation of young citizens in elections, representing 73%.
The resulting non-active engagement of young citizens in political life is rather alarming as it might lead to phenomena such as radicalisation, which in turn can undermine contemporary democratic ideas and expressions of freedom of choice.
Innovation
The project’s scope is to promote political and social participation of young EU citizens, through the design and development of an interactive gamified platform, based on learning and exchange of views and ideas, combining inclusive non-formal education as well as networking and active community engagement.
