Challenge

Approximately 10% of the population in EU were born in a different country from the one they reside in, 5% of whom are children under the age of 15. Although the pattern varies between EU member states, children with a migrant background tend to have lower educational performance and are more likely to leave school early than children from a native background.

Active participation in society, in particular educational and social activities, is very important for the integration of third-country nationals. Thus, schooling and support of educational achievement are one of the most effective migrant integration strategies.

Innovation

By supporting the development and implementation of educational support models for newly arrived third-country national children in Greece, Italy and Spain – including academic support, parental involvement and intercultural education and public awareness raising – INTEGRATED will contribute to the elimination of the educational disadvantages TCN children experience and will enhance their participation in education.

Action

Research was performed in Greece, Spain and Italy, in order to map the existing situation regarding the integration of third country national students in secondary education and the needs of the educational community for supporting it.

An Educational Support Model developed and piloted in secondary schools in Greece, Spain and Italy. The Educational Support Model includes linguistic support, academic support, outreach and cooperation, and intercultural education.

The programme includes mentoring to high school TCN pupils by older students (university students/graduates or higher-grade students of migrant background). The Mentors will act as role models, by offering support for studying and learning, as well as guidance on navigating the school system. A Mentor’s Guide was developed and made available to the trained mentors to support and guide them during the mentoring process.

Publication of a booklet with information on various aspects of schooling such as levels of schooling, the rights and responsibilities of caregivers, attendance, homework, school terms and holidays, and how parents can support the children’s learning at home.

A guide on developing and implementing diversity school policies and action plans was produced and disseminated to the participating schools to assist them in the process.
