Grant Agreement: 2022-2-IT03-KA220-YOU-000096741

Challenge

In 2015, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance warned that hate speech was becoming increasingly habitual, especially online.

63% of girls surveyed reported some form of online harassment on social media; 38% of people with disabilities experienced hate speech in the 12 months preceding the survey; and 17 % were victims of physical violence.

Despite this awareness, little is known about the trends and expressions used to disseminate cyber hate. It is thus crucial to improve our understanding of the prevalence of online hate speech and to empower ordinary citizens, especially younger ones, to monitor and report it.

Innovation

HATETRACKERS seeks to combat online hate speech by equipping youths, youth organizations and citizens’ committees with the necessary competences to recognize and act against such human rights violations.

To achieve this, Hate Trackers proposes two new tools: (1) the creation of local network (Semiological Guerrilla Units) consisting of youth 14-24 years old and activists trained to counteract hate speech both online and offline and, (2) the creation of the #HateTrackers app and social online platform where they can discuss, train new members, and share their own best practices.

Action

Τhis activity includes innovative tools that equip youths with the necessary knowledge to combat online hate speech.

Specifically, the #HateTrackers application and the complementary educational material provide information, training and support to help youths better understand and counter the phenomenon of hate speech.
