PRO-GENDERING

PROmoting Gender mainstrEaming iN acaDemia through thE enhancement of gendeR equalIty and iNclusion in hiGher education

An Erasmus+ project aspiring to facilitate structural and cultural change at Higher Education Institutions around gender equality.

GA number: 2023-1-IT02-KA220-HED-000154344

Funded by: Erasmus+      Duration: 01/09/2023-31/08/2026

Challenge

According to the 2021 She Figures report, only a third of researchers in the EU were women in 2018 and their working conditions were inferior.

Women are still under-represented in university governing bodies, in the representation of universities, and at various levels of university decision-making. Traditionally, areas of knowledge and fields of research with a majority presence of women have not been accorded the same recognition as others, and fields focusing on gender issues have remained outside the circle of academic recognition altogether.

Gender inequality in research limits the value of scientific knowledge for finding equitable and inclusive solutions to contemporary social problems, as envisioned in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Innovation

PRO-GENDERING aspires to support a more gender-equal Higher Education Department (HED) sector through the implementation and monitoring of Gender Equality Plans (GEPs).

Action

A Handbook will be developed, consisting of innovative methods and tools to support HEIs to apply, monitor and evaluate the implementation of their GEPs. The results will contribute to fostering the gender equality culture at HEIs. There will be a particular focus on measures on improving awareness of Gender Equality, measures against gender-based violence, and inclusive campuses with accessible working and learning environments where everyone is treated with respect. To this purpose, Country reports will be produced by conducting national-scale research on resources and needs for implementing GEPs, as well as an online report as an elaboration of the comparative Google Slides slide book.

Through facilitating small-scale student projects implemented at the institutions, the aim is to support the partner and associated universities to engage university students in the enhancement of gender-equal and inclusive culture at HEIs. Pro-gendering will address the need to better engage university students through participatory approaches in gender mainstreaming especially among Students’ Communities, promoting and improving gender-equal culture, such as equal opportunities in education and career, inclusive education, safe and inclusive learning environment, gender identity, GBV or toxic masculinity. At each university, students will be supported to form teams, and design and implement projects focusing on mainstreaming GE and GEP.

The aim is to identify the lessons learned during the implementation of the project; provide good practices and policy recommendations to all relevant stakeholders; and enhance the policy dialogue not only among key stakeholders but also among wider audiences.
