Challenge

As outlined in the CoE Strategy on the Advancement of Romani Women and Girls (2014-2020), Roma women across Europe face not only gender discrimination but also the additional burden of racism, which push them to the margin of their society. Low educational achievements, high rates of irregular attendance and school dropouts and poor employment opportunities deprive Roma women and girls of realistic possibilities for integration and active participation in society.

At the same time, violence against Roma women and girls remains widespread in Europe, with devastating consequences for women and girls, as well as for societies and democracies. Roma women often fall victims of domestic violence, early and child and/or forced marriages, trafficking and forced prostitution, forced sterilisation, violence by the police and verbal or physical abuse by various state actors etc.

Innovation

PATTERN aims to contribute to the prevention, recognition and combating of domestic violence among Roma women (16+ years old) in Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Romania and the EU, as well as empowering them to recognize and report domestic violence and to act as leaders of change in their communities. In order to support these women, the project will target Roma intercultural mediators and professionals working in community centers or other local/community services.

Action

National and summary reports on the current situation of Roma women concerning domestic violence, based on in-depth interviews with Roma women.

Domestic Violence Protocols for Roma women will be developed, based on focus groups with experts, professionals and key representatives of the Roma communities and exchange workshops.

A capacity building program on domestic violence for Roma intercultural mediators and professionals in community centres or other local/community services.

Trainings for the empowerment of Roma women on how to recognise and report domestic violence and act as leaders of change in their communities will be implemented.

An online platform to make all the trainings and capacity building materials available to the maximum number of professionals.

Awareness raising material, events and campaign (production of short films) to further contribute to the prevention of domestic violence by enhancing the awareness of Roma communities.
