Exploring Green Futures: Integrating the New European Bauhaus into Art and Design Education

An Erasmus+ project aiming to integrate Art & Design courses to support the digital and green capabilities of the Higher Education sector.

GA number: 2023-1-CY01-KA220-HED-000160668

Funded by: Erasmus+      Duration: 02/10/2023-01/10/2025

Challenge

EU recommendations have noted that the green transition has created a new demand for all sectors to upskill and reskill (EU, 2022). Until recently this has mainly been dealt with through traditional courses and qualifications.

This approach has often brought a reluctance for people to undertake further studies since it is often expensive and time-consuming, particularly as people wish to continue to ensure their employability and career progression while accessing further studies to enhance their own personal development.

It is only recently that learning opportunities of smaller volume (micro-credentials) are being promoted and developed in response to a demand for more flexible, learner-centered forms of education and training.

Innovation

Futures DesignED focuses on the development of alternative spaces of learning (green spaces, transdisciplinary spaces, online spaces etc.) to host micro-credential courses and integrated workshops specifically for the fields of Art & Design in Higher Education (HE) in line with the Green transition.

Action

Futures DesignED plans to develop a minimum of 6 micro-credential courses based on the themes of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) and SDGs aiming to equip Art & Design Students, Graduates and Working Professionals with skills deemed necessary for the green transition. It also aims to produce learning material, which promotes behavioral change both personally and professionally, in line with the NEB and the Green transition goals.

Futures DesignED aims to outline recommendations for Alternative spaces of learning for Art & Design Education in line with the NEB, highlighting them not only as spaces providing opportunities to current students but also as flexible and easily attainable solutions to working professionals who wish to upskill or reskill. It also aims to support digital and green capabilities by establishing an e-learning platform and a Digital Interactive Toolkit to implement micro-credential courses and course material.

The goals of Futures DesignED are to train Art & Design HE Educators in the newly developed micro-credential courses; engage current students & working professionals from the creative industries in the pilot of micro-credential courses; and integrate participant feedback for the strengthening of course content and training material.
