Seniors Climate Action

An Erasmus+ project that mobilises elderly visual artists to become actors of climate change.

GA number: 2022-2-SK01-KA220-ADU-000098350

Funded by: Erasmus+      Duration: 01/01/2023-01/01/2025

Challenge

Climate change poses a global challenge, compounded by a growing ageing population expected to reach 21.1% by 2050, which translates to one in five people globally. Studies show that the elderly are the population with one of the highest greenhouse gas emissions, yet climate action does not seem to be a main concern for them.

Research indicates that issues like social isolation, health concerns, and limited mobility hinder older people from actively engaging in sustainable causes. Stereotypes and a lack of initiatives further marginalise their involvement. Nevertheless, senior people can and should be part of solutions to climate change.

Innovation

SCA aims to mobilise older (potential) visual artists aged 65+ in Slovakia, Italy, Greece, Spain and Italy to become actors of green change and to influence other older people to be more conscious of the environment.

Action

The ‘Elderly Artists fight Climate Change’ Curriculum aims to raise awareness about environmental and climate-change challenges and suggest solutions for environmental sustainability. It aspires to empower senior artists with the knowledge of how to fight climate change through their art, as well as sensitise them for their active role as agents of change and for engaging in environmental actions in their communities.

The aim is to create an e-learning space for senior visual artists, through which they can enjoy access to a wide range of lifelong learning opportunities. The goal is to facilitate a cross-cultural network of collaboration between EU senior artists who can virtually display their artworks to raise awareness and generate environmental change as well as to empower them to increase their civic participation and become the new ambassadors against climate change counteracting age discrimination.

.Creation of a Toolkit, which can be used by relevant professionals working not only with senior artists but also with senior people in general. The goal is to equip professionals with practical methodologies and tools to increase the civic participation and environmental awareness of older people. It is meant to offer practical advice and guidance regarding creativity and how to develop it in order to raise awareness for environmental issues, with a special emphasis on eliminating the barriers for the elderly community to be actively involved in actions towards sustainability.
