Βreaking Barriers – Consent Education and Safe Disclosure for Young Women with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities

GA number:  101254450

Funded by: CERV Duration: 01/04/2026-31/03/2028

Challenge

Research has consistently shown that women and girls with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities experience across Europe significantly higher rates of sexual and gender-based violence than the general population.

Yet accessible sexuality education, safeguarding information, and reporting mechanisms remain limited. Communication barriers, discrimination, and inaccessible services continue to prevent many young women from recognising abuse, exercising their rights, and safely disclosing violence. Addressing these inequalities requires prevention approaches specifically designed around their needs.

Innovation

BREAK strengthens the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence by making sexuality education and safe disclosure accessible to young women with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). Combining inclusive digital tools, adapted learning materials, professional training, and policy advocacy, BREAK removes barriers that often exclude women with disabilities from primary prevention initiatives.

Action

Τhe BREAKpoint platform is an accessible platform tailored to the communication and cognitive needs of young women with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Combining comprehensive sexuality education with symbol-supported storytelling, the platform helps women with IDD understand consent, recognise unsafe situations, express personal boundaries, and safely disclose experiences of violence.

Equipping educators, therapists, support workers and caregivers with practical skills, guidance, and digital tools to deliver accessible sexuality education, facilitate safe disclosures, recognize safeguarding concerns and provide customized support to women with IDD.

Delivering accessible educational workshops that enable young people with IDD to understand consent, build healthy relationships, exercise their rights, stay safe online, and recognise and prevent sexual and gender-based violence.

Evidence-based policy recommendations, national roundtables and position papers, and an EU policy brief equip policymakers with guidance to strengthen disability-informed policies that prevent sexual and gender-based violence against women with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
