SMILE – Sustainable MobILity in school Education

By the end of this century, the Earth’s climate is poised to undergo significant changes, driven by the substantial emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. According to the findings of the International Energy Agency (IEA), although global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions experienced a modest increase of less than 1% in 2022, they continue to follow an unsustainable growth trajectory. This highlights the urgent need for more robust measures to accelerate the transition towards clean energy.

Introducing greener initiatives, such as sustainable mobility, holds the potential to not only enhance the wellbeing and health of current citizens but also leave a positive impact on future generations.

Addressing climate change is an enduring challenge that demands unwavering commitment. This underscores the critical importance of integrating education about climate change at both elementary and high school levels. Empowering teachers with knowledge and skills related to environmentally-friendly activities will play a pivotal role in advancing environmental sustainability.


The SMILE project has a primary objective of enhancing teachers’ capabilities to effectively engage students in climate change, sustainable mobility, and STEAM education activities. By doing so, the project aims to raise awareness on these crucial topics.

Recognising that schools play a vital role in climate change education, it is essential for educators and school leaders to be adequately trained and well-informed as front-line professionals. Empowering them with the right knowledge and skills will enable schools to take meaningful actions towards addressing climate change and its impacts.


The SMILE project will provide educators with a comprehensive and evidence-based Methodology and e-Guide to facilitate the implementation of climate change and STEM education activities. The Methodology will be accessible online, serving as a valuable resource to support the partnership in developing and executing SMILE initiatives. On the other hand, the e-Guide will offer educators, school leaders, and other stakeholders rich theoretical material to enhance their understanding and equip them with the knowledge needed to effectively engage and inspire students in these critical areas.

The project will offer an e-learning space with blended modules, training curriculum, digital escape rooms, animation videos, and other educational resources for both students and teachers. Overall, it aims to empower teachers and school leaders on getting familiar with climate change issues and sustainable mobility to be able to better support students.

As part of the SMILE project, we will develop educational resources, particularly digital escape rooms, centered around climate change education and sustainable mobility. Additionally, engaging animation videos will be designed to raise awareness among students and inspire positive changes in behavior. Through these resources, students will become more climate-conscious and actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
