Recent figures show that one third of refugees and migrants arriving in Europe are children. Equally many children are “left behind”. The phrase “children left behind” often refers to “children raised in their home countries or in their countries of habitual residence, who have been left behind by adult migrants responsible for them”. One or both parents may leave these children with family members, friends, the wider community, a childcare institution or on their own in order to find work, continue their studies or seek a better life. This circumstance affects a child’s development, financial situation and opportunities from a detrimental to a beneficial level – depending on political decisions. However, policies concerning whether and how children are “left behind” – including migration management and labour migration policies – often ignore the impact on children and their relation to the migrant parent. The link between child well-being, labour and migration policies needs to be clearly established in order to ensure that these children can reach their full potential.
“NO left behind children” project focuses on developing new educational methods for migrant parents and parental educators and on stimulating the relation between parents and children through the use of technology. The ultimate goal is to help them build continuous and substantial communication.
