Πρόκληση

One of the most crucial concerns raised by the COVID-19 pandemic is its environmental impact. Several studies have spotted the dramatic effects of the COVID-19 on oceans and life underwater, as they have noticed a significant increase on the use of plastic medical and protective equipment, such as single-use gloves, masks and aprons. This development indicates a new kind of pollution that adds to the existing plastic pollution and poses environmental, economic, health and aesthetic problems. More action is needed. According to the UN Environment Programme, “we must invest in promoting actions by youth”, as this will enable us “to build the momentum to address the challenges of tomorrow”. Youth could undertake a pioneering role in the area and lead activities aiming to raise awareness around ocean protection and the relevance of the pandemic to plastic litter.

The Guide will consist of roadmaps and good practices to ensure youth participation in ocean protection activities and actions to address pandemic relevance to plastic litter. Additionally, it will enable the target groups to utilise digital artworks to boost youth participation and involvement in an issue of global concern in order to act as ocean activists and raise awareness, advocate and express themselves through visual artworks. The Guide will be field-tested and evaluated by the users.

A Capacity Building curriculum for youth workers, working/collaborating with CSOs, youth and environmental organisations, cultural and creative sector grassroots, will be developed. The aim of the programme is to foster youth workers’ ability to enhance youth participation and to motivate youth to address pandemic relevance to plastic litter through visual artworks. The specific action will be research-based, field-tested and evaluated-by- the-beneficiaries, in order to be suited to the actual needs of the target groups.

The Awareness Raising and Policy Toolkit will enable the beneficiaries to raise public awareness, lead and contribute to the development of youth policies that promote active participation of youth in the fight against marine and “COVID-Waste” litter.
