Bridging Differences through Youth Comedy Clubs

Challenge
Social division and discrimination are increasing in Europe, affecting people of African heritage, Roma communities, and immigrants. Many face unfair treatment, limited opportunities, and social exclusion. The EU Anti-Racism Action Plan 2020–2025 highlights the urgent need to tackle these injustices. According to the FRA, 77% of people of African descent in the EU have faced racial discrimination. Online hate speech, false information, and prejudice on social media make fears and tensions worse. Economic uncertainty, migration pressures, and global crises increase mistrust between communities. These challenges contribute to growing inequality, division, and marginalization, making it harder for people from different backgrounds to live together in understanding, safety, and mutual respect.
Innovation
Laugh Together addresses rising racism, prejudice, and cultural polarisation by using comedy as an accessible tool for intercultural dialogue and inclusion. Unlike traditional theatre, humour creates a safe, disarming space where sensitive topics can be explored without fear or stigma. Through improvisation and interactive exercises, the initiative boosts engagement, empathy, and shared understanding, supported by neuroscience showing humour enhances motivation and reduces stress. By fostering active participation and community connection, Laugh Together equips young people to challenge misinformation, resist xenophobic narratives, and build resilience, offering an innovative and impactful response to Europe’s growing social fragmentation.
