Challenge

In the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, children across Europe are showing rising signs of emotional distress, anxiety, low self-confidence and difficulties in peer relationships—often at increasingly younger ages. Primary school has become a frontline for mental wellbeing, yet many education systems still treat social and emotional skills as “extra” rather than essential. Teachers are expected to manage complex classroom dynamics without consistent training or structured resources that fit everyday teaching. At the same time, families are under pressure and often lack accessible guidance to support children’s resilience at home. This widening gap between children’s needs and schools’ capacity makes early support more urgent than ever.

Innovation

“Mind Matters” strengthens children’s emotional resilience by embedding wellbeing into everyday primary education. It uses a whole-school approach, equipping teachers to integrate social and emotional learning into lessons, helping children practice key skills through safe, play-based learning, and supporting parents with guidance that reinforces progress at home. .

Action

An audio-visual European Index of Good Practices, showcasing 30 real examples of how primary schools strengthen children’s psychosocial and emotional wellbeing across Europe.

A validated professional development course that equips primary teachers with concrete strategies to support children’s emotional and psychosocial development.

A 3D simulation game that places children in realistic, everyday situations where they can explore friendships, emotions, conflict and communication.

The Parenting Resource Hub helps families support children’s emotional resilience with practical, accessible tools. It includes wellbeing resources, guidance materials, and awareness-raising content designed for family routines

This action turns evidence and school practice into clear policy recommendations for strengthening psychosocial and emotional resilience in primary education. It supports decision-makers with practical guidance that reflects real classroom needs.
