EMPOWER

EMPOWER – Educational Materials for Practitioners providing Opportunities for vulnerable Women’s Employability and Resilience

Empowering vulnerable women through better support services from professionals and volunteers who work with them.

Project Number: 2015-1-UK01-KA202-013592

Funded by: Erasmus+        Duration: 31/12/15- 30/08/18

Challenge

The recent economic recession has intensified the need for better support services to vulnerable adults and particularly women across Europe. Statistics show the harsh reality facing many women in EU. Actually, there is a gender gap in labor market participation as women employment rate was 66.5% and men 78% in 2017. This affects the risk of poverty rate, as 25% of women live at risk of poverty than 23% of men. Also, 1 in 3 women across Europe has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15, while 68% of human trafficking victims are women (Eurostat, 2013). These statistics highlight the need for better support services and training to vulnerable women in order to increase their employability and resilience.

Innovation

The project EMPOWER aimed at empowering vulnerable women through better support services from professionals and volunteers who work with them. The goal was to help women to gain employment and financial independence, a key step towards preventing victims from becoming stuck in circles of violence and abuse.

Apart from face-to-face trainings, an e-learning hub was developed to provide an online space for the Support Workers and the vulnerable women who are working together on issues of employability and entrepreneurship. The online EMPOWER learning hub consists of two courses: EMPOWER Others Training Package which includes soft skills for supporting workers and EMPOWER Yourself Training Package for vulnerable women wishing to re-enter in the labour market. The training packages consist of 8 Units.

In Empower Circles through guided questioning sections, participants take it in turns to have a time slot to talk about their problem or opportunity and the other group members offer questions. The EMPOWER Mentoring Circles were delivered to four groups per country,  two groups with support workers and two groups with women who have faced severe hardship in their lives. The Circles covered important areas such as soft skills building, goalsetting and prioritizing, finding your motivation, networking, communication, presentation, and time management. Empower Circles are led by skilled facilitators with expertise in action learning.
