ACES

Ambiguity Competence for Education and Society

GA number:  KA220-SCH-62D7B044

Funded by: Erasmus+     Duration: 01/11/2025-31/10/2028

Challenge

Across Europe, schools face growing difficulty preparing young people for a world defined by rapid change, uncertainty, and conflicting information. Many teachers feel unprepared to handle sensitive or controversial topics, leading them to avoid the very conversations that build critical thinking, empathy, and democratic skills. As a result, students miss out on meaningful opportunities to explore diverse perspectives and navigate complex social realities—competences that are essential in 2025 and the years ahead.

Innovation

ACES empowers educators to confidently address uncertainty and diverse viewpoints in the classroom, turning complex topics into meaningful dialogue. By doing so, they strengthen students’ critical thinking and inspire them to participate actively and responsibly in democratic life.

Action

A practical framework shows schools how to help students navigate uncertainty, complexity, and diverse viewpoints. It brings together guidance and insights from European classrooms, giving educators a strong foundation for more open and reflective learning.

Hands-on training helps teachers, school leaders, and trainers turn sensitive or complex topics into meaningful discussions. Adaptable resources—such as case studies and simulations—support daily practice, while a certification pathway recognises those who build strong skills in teaching ambiguity.

Schools in several countries try out new teaching approaches that encourage open dialogue, shared problem-solving, and engagement with uncertainty. By using case studies, guided discussions, and decision-making activities, teachers see how students respond when invited to explore complex or sensitive topics.

A European community brings educators, researchers, and policymakers together to exchange ideas and strengthen democratic learning. A multilingual online hub offers free access to all materials and tools, making long-term use simple and accessible.

Through policy briefs, roundtables, and practical recommendations, decision-makers gain clear direction on how to integrate teaching approaches that build students’ confidence in handling uncertainty, encourage open dialogue, and strengthen critical thinking.
