Challenge

Across Europe, schools are trying to become more sustainable, but many still face challenges in teaching and assessing the skills young people need to respond to today’s global crises—like climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality. These crises make it essential for students to understand how their choices affect the environment, society, and future generations. Key skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and systems thinking are often missing from daily learning, and existing tools to support this are either unclear, misused, or exclude student voices. True transformation requires more than isolated school efforts—it needs the active involvement of educators, leaders, and communities to reshape education systems and support a shift toward a greener, fairer world. Without strong, inclusive ways to promote sustainability learning, education cannot reach its full potential in building long-term change.

Innovation

GATE helps schools respond to today’s sustainability challenges by offering tools and support that bring real change to classrooms and school communities.
At its core, GATE aims to redefine what it means for a school to be innovative and sustainable. By embedding sustainability competences—knowledge, skills, attitudes and values—into education systems from an early age, the project promotes meaningful, long-term transformation. Using the GreenComp framework as a foundation, GATE empowers students, educators and policymakers to build greener, fairer, and more inclusive school environments. Through a holistic and learner-centred approach, GATE positions schools as active drivers of the green transition and social change.

Action

A digital tool to help students, educators, and schools evaluate their sustainability competences using the GreenComp framework. It covers all 12 competences and offers separate pathways for different user groups, with questions adapted to each. The tool helps schools identify areas for improvement and integrate sustainability into daily practices and school culture.

A modular training programme for teachers and policymakers, built around micro-courses and active learning methods. It will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to teach and promote sustainability competences, using the GreenComp framework and creating the following 5 micro-courses:

  • GreenComp competences
  • A Whole School Approach to Sustainability
  • School Self-Evaluation Theoretical Framework
  • School Self-Evaluation Tools
  • Hands-on school practices within the five axes of sustainability
  • Transnational workshops will train selected professionals to deliver the programme further

Real-life testing of the GATE Self-Evaluation Framework in schools across Europe. These pilot projects will collect data on student engagement, teaching methods, and school practices, providing valuable insights into how to improve and scale sustainability education.

A certification process to officially recognise schools that show strong commitment to sustainability. Schools will follow clear guidelines and best practices to assess and improve their performance across five key sustainability areas (1. Governance, 2. Curriculum, 3. Teachers’ professional development, 4. Campus and facilities management, 5. School environment and community engagement), encouraging long-term systemic change.

A structured space for collaboration with policymakers, experts, and stakeholders at national and international levels. The forum will produce concrete policy recommendations based on project findings, aiming to influence future policies on sustainability in education.
