Funded by: ERASMUS      Duration: 01/03/2025-29/02/2028

Challenge

Declining well-being among students and teachers is increasingly linked to the misuse and overconsumption of digital technologies. Over 20% of children in Europe are exposed to harmful online content, and around 25% report being upset by something they encountered online (Smahel et al., 2020; European Commission, 2023). According to PISA 2022, 59% of students feel distracted by others using digital devices in class, and 45% feel anxious when their phones are not nearby (OECD, 2023). Despite the growing role of digital education, there is currently no comprehensive, research-informed approach to support digital well-being in schools — leaving students, teachers, and families without the necessary tools, competencies, or strategies to cope (Council of the European Union, 2022; DESI, 2022).

Innovation

PERMA-Digital helps schools promote well-being in digital education. It offers a research-based framework and training for teachers and families to build students’ and teachers’ digital skills and mental health. By supporting whole-school practices and testing its approach in several countries, PERMA-Digital aims to create positive digital learning environments and inform policies across Europe.

Action

A collection of 20 practical guides, tips, and examples to help parents and caregivers support their childrens’ balanced and healthy use of digital technology at home.

A detailed report presenting data and real-life case studies from schools that tested the programme, showing its effects on student well-being and school communities.
