Skills development to support SMEs during succession and transfer processes

Success Skills aims at strengthening business succession as a key factor for SME competitiveness and sustainable growth across European regions.

Challenge

Business transfers are increasingly becoming a key component of the strategic development, renewal, and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, the process can be complex and demanding due to financial, managerial, regulatory, and administrative challenges. Each year, around 450,000 SMEs change ownership across Europe, directly affecting over 2 million employees. 

Innovation

Success Skills supports learning and knowledge exchange between regions on how to manage business succession effectively. It focuses on developing practical tools, training materials, and a certification system to support this process. These resources aim to strengthen both digital and interpersonal skills of those involved in business transfers—whether they are advising others or preparing to take over a business themselves.

Action

A total of 57 organisations, including public authorities and business support organisations, from 10 partner regions will work together towards efficient business succession.

5 regions will improve their knowledge and skills on business succession for SMEs and transfer them in their respective regions.

These learning events, will address core topics related to business succession, foster policy learning and enhance the partners’ institutional capacity in supporting SMEs become sustainable businesses.

They provide hands-on experience and knowledge, strengthening the transfer of the policy lessons learned.

One per identified topic, that will promote the production of 6 ‘Policy Learning Guidelines’

Partners organize stakeholder group meetings in their regions, ensuring that regional stakeholders are actively involved in the project, contributing to regional policy learning, but also, being mentored the results from the interregional activities.

The report includes 32 good practices and methods from partner regions, that promote tested solutions in the methods and approaches that facilitate smooth succession trajectories in SMEs.
