Independent Living for Persons with Disabilities in a Digital World: A New Educational Platform by KMOP

Digital education can open pathways to autonomy and social empowerment for persons with disabilities. Through two new educational platforms, KMOP empowers persons with disabilities by offering practical tools and comprehensive training to support daily life and social inclusion.

Platform for Persons with Disabilities

With educational resources, tutorials, and exercises, participants can:

  • Improve their social and digital skills.
  • Strengthen their self-confidence and independence.
  • Engage actively in community life.

This platform stands out for its practical and personalised approach, enabling each user to build skills for independent living.

Platform for Professionals Working with Persons with Disabilities

Through asynchronous training resources and tutorials, participating professionals can:

  • Enhance their skills in communication and social empowerment.
  • Support individuals with diverse needs effectively, using practical tools and guidance.
  • Apply universal accessibility strategies in professional and social contexts.

This platform offers holistic training that blends theory with practical examples, while remaining user-friendly—even for professionals with limited digital skills. It provides all the tools needed to support persons with disabilities effectively, regardless of their individual needs.

Policy Recommendations for Genuine Inclusion

Following two years of intensive research, development, and pilot testing, and in collaboration with European organisations, KMOP has developed a set of policy recommendations to promote autonomy and inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Key recommendations include:

  • A holistic support model: Combining legal reforms, training for both professionals and persons with disabilities, improved vocational rehabilitation infrastructure, and closer cooperation between organisations.
  • A common European approach: Adoption of shared guidelines to promote independent living across Europe.
  • Digital inclusion: Prioritising action against digital illiteracy and exclusion through training and accessible tools.
  • Active participation of persons with disabilities: Co-creation of learning materials and tools to ensure credibility and empowerment.
  • Opportunities for learning: Mentoring, workshops, and co-development of digital content linked to real employment and social opportunities.
  • Continuous evaluation: Ongoing data collection and feedback to adapt services to the real needs of persons with disabilities.

You can read the policy recommendations here.

This educational material was developed within the framework of the European SKILLS project, through which KMOP has created a fully accessible digital knowledge ecosystem. The project equips both professionals and persons with disabilities with the tools needed for independence, empowerment, and active participation in society.
