As online gaming continues to grow in popularity, so too do the concerns around excessive use and its impact on young people’s health and wellbeing. To address this pressing issue, KMOP – Social Action and Innovation Centre is organising an interactive event on “Digital Safety and Prevention of Online Gaming Addiction” on Tuesday, 30 September 2025 from 17.30 to 19.00, at Hotel Brain Academy in Athens. In this event, we will bring together mental health professionals, educators, policy makers, parents and young people for an open discussion on the risks of digital overuse and ways to safeguard children and adolescents in the online world.
Participation is free, you can secure your spot here. The discussion will be held in Greek.
A Growing Global Concern
In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognised gaming disorder in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). The condition is defined as a behavioural pattern marked by reduced control over gaming, prioritising games over other activities, and continuing play despite harmful consequences.
While technology offers powerful tools for learning, communication and entertainment, experts warn that excessive online gaming can harm young people’s mental health, family life and social interactions. KMOP’s event aims to shed light on both the challenges and the strategies that can help protect youth in the digital age.
What to Expect
You will be informed about critical topics, such as:
-
Current risks and challenges facing children and adolescents online.
-
Scientific evidence on recognising and addressing gaming addiction.
-
The role of prevention and early intervention, especially by professionals, educators and parents.
-
Good practices and therapeutic approaches that build resilience and support healthy digital habits.
The programme also includes the presentation of KMOP’s recent research on young people’s online behaviours, and an introduction to the European initiative MINDSET, which equips youth professionals with tools and educational material to better detect and manage gaming-related problems.
Building Awareness, Strengthening Resilience
The event is open to youth workers, educators, psychologists, social workers, policy makers, parents and young people who wish to better understand prevention and empowerment strategies. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
With digital technologies increasingly embedded in daily life, KMOP’s initiative seeks to balance opportunity with responsibility, raising awareness of risks while promoting healthier and more resilient approaches to internet use among youth.
Let’s join forces to make young people’s mental health a priority.
