In&InEducation - Inclusive education with an intersectional approach, for the school success of girls and boys of migrant origin

Πρόκληση

According to the Eurydice Report on integrating students from migrant backgrounds into schools in Europe, which was published in 2019, the rate of students dropping out of school early is still quite high. Spain and Italy have the second and third highest rates, with 31.9% and 30.1% respectively, while Greece comes in at ninth place with a rate of 16.9%. The report also found that the dropout rate for Spanish and Italian students is also concerning, with 15.6% in Spain (ranking fifth out of 34 countries) and 12% in Italy (ranking ninth out of 34 countries). In Greece, the rate of Greek students dropping out of school early is much lower at 5.4%, which ranks 26th out of 34 countries. However, the dropout rate of foreign students is three times higher than that of Greek students which means that something is failing as in Spain and Italy where this rate is twice as high. These data reveal the relevance of strengthening the educational inclusion of students with a migrant background.

Καινοτομία

The project aims to promote the intersectional educational inclusion of girls and boys with a migrant background in schools, in Mediterranean Europe (Spain, Italy, and Greece). It will also respond to the different needs of girls and boys students with a migrant or refugee background in order to facilitate their school success and social inclusion in the European Union.

Δράσεις

This study maps out the resources, devices, and best practices that promote educational inclusion and continuity for migrant boys and girls in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Palermo in Italy, and Athens in Greece. The study takes an intersectional approach, with a focus on promoting educational opportunities for both girls and boys. The case studies conducted in these cities provide practical insights for schools and will be especially helpful for migrant families looking to provide their children with a quality education.

This teacher training module on educational inclusion of students of migrant origin takes an intersectional approach and includes interactive materials that showcase good practices through case studies. In addition, the module draws on the experience of various organisations involved in the project.

These videos are about putting an end to preconceived ideas and roles assigned to women and men. Roles that, in the case of girls of migrant origin, limit their opportunities, leading in some cultures to domestic chores and marriages at an early age. The videos developed by each partner will be designed for use in schools with students, reinforcing social and intercultural skills, but also to be shared with their families. They will be available for use by other educational centres and for dissemination to the general public.
