GA number: 101102180

Funded by: AMIF     Duration: 01/05/2023 – 30/04/2025

Challenge

The SAFER project addresses several key challenges related to irregular migration from Pakistan to Europe. It aims to counter widespread misinformation and false promises spread by smugglers by providing reliable, balanced information on the dangers of irregular migration. The project also seeks to shift perceptions and behaviors among young Pakistani men by highlighting legal migration alternatives and local economic opportunities. Another major challenge it tackles is the lack of accessible, trusted information within communities; SAFER addresses this by engaging local influencers and using word-of-mouth and social media.

Innovation

The SAFER project introduces an innovative, community-driven approach by using trusted local researchers, community members and other local stakeholders to spread awareness through word-of-mouth—proven effective in the target regions. It tailors messages to young men with limited education opportunities, providing information that will support the informed-based decisions.

Action

30 community events with more than 1780 participants held across the 5 target regions (Islamabad Capital Territory, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh). These events served as platforms for direct engagement with the target audience, bringing together local community figures and young people to discuss important aspects of irregular migration. Additionally, 21 outreach session with more than 663 participants.

Two impact assessment reports evaluating the effectiveness of the campaign in the different regions. These reports measured shifts in awareness, perceptions, and intentions related to irregular migration. Using both quantitative data and qualitative methods—such as focus groups and interviews—they captured community-level insights. Feedback mechanisms built into the project to adjust communication strategies in real time, ensuring the campaign remains responsive and relevant.

A digital platform providing valuable information related to risks of irregular migration as well as legal advices on regular migration methods. Key aim of the platform is to serve as a sustainable solution preventing exploitation and offering an accessible, trusted source of information for migration.
