Health Up!: Tackling eating disorders through VET Education

Health Up!

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, eating disorders have seen a sharp rise across Europe, particularly among young people aged 15 to 25. Today, over 20 million individuals across the continent are affected by conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder.

An eating disorder is defined as a mental health condition where the patient uses food to cope with feelings and other situations, such as social, environmental or physical issues. The social isolation of the pandemic led to more psychological disorders and disturbances in eating habits, as well as to the reduction of physical exercise.

HEALTH UP!: A new initiative toward a healthier lifestyle

To address this urgent challenge, KMOP has joined forces with the University of Zaragoza and three other European organizations to integrate eating disorder prevention into Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems. Recognizing that VET centres are where many students spend most of their time, “HEALTH UP!” empowers VET trainers to support young people in building healthy habits, recognizing early warning signs, and responding appropriately to eating-related struggles.

What HEALTH UP! Offers

KMOP, through “Health Up!” will develop a suite of practical resources to strengthen the role of VET education in promoting mental and physical wellbeing:

  • Guide to Eating Disorders: A user-friendly manual providing VET educators with essential knowledge about eating disorders and how to identify them.

  • Nutrition Workshops: Interactive sessions designed to promote balanced eating habits among students and foster awareness around food choices.

  • Lifestyle Workshops: Training modules focused on mental health, stress management, and lifestyle factors that influence eating behaviours.

  • HEALTH UP! App: A digital tool to engage young people and raise awareness on the importance of early detection and prevention.

What’s Next?

In the coming months, partners will pilot the tools in selected VET centres and gather feedback from trainers and students to refine the materials.
