Many children with a migrant background face significant challenges in integrating into both the school environment and wider society. Limited proficiency in the host country’s language, lack of social and emotional support, insufficient training for teachers to manage multicultural classrooms, and poor communication between schools and families are among the key obstacles. Furthermore, limited funding for inclusion initiatives exacerbates the situation, restricting opportunities for equal access to education.
KMOP – Social Action and Innovation Centre, through the European project SCHOOLinHUB, supports the inclusion and language acquisition of children aged 4 to 7 with a migrant background, including refugees and asylum seekers. Adopting a holistic approach, the initiative empowers children, parents, and educators by fostering essential skills and strengthening community ties.
Through this action, KMOP contributes to transforming selected schools into local hubs of inclusion, promoting diversity and respect. At the same time, it supports the development of professional training programmes for teachers, with a focus on the CLIL methodology (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and the use of social stories for intercultural education.
KMOP through SCHOOLinHUB will develop:
- an online tool to assess schools’ readiness for inclusion
- a digital mapping tool featuring 180 best practices in inclusion and language support
- a multicultural strategy guide for schools
- infographics summarising national findings and showcasing effective practices.
KMOP is also involved in creating a Language Skills Enhancement Course for migrant parents, aiming to improve their linguistic competence.
The approach places strong emphasis on parental engagement, the empowerment of teachers, and the mobilisation of local communities. Together with schools, NGOs, and social organisations, KMOP organises Capacity-Building Workshops for professionals supporting migrant families.
The initiative also invests in innovative digital tools: an educational platform (e-portal), a mobile app, and an interactive 2D learning game will support learners in developing key skills, while making learning accessible and engaging.
Partners in this action, implemented under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), include SAN University (Poland), the Directorate of Primary Education of Western Greece, the Greek Forum of Refugees, and the following organisations: Public Consulting Group (Poland), RIC Novo mesto (Slovenia), Berlin Cosmopolitan School (Germany), A&A Emphasys and CitizensACT (Cyprus), Pelican Language School (Czech Republic), CSC Credito Senza Confini (Italy), Udruga roditelja “Korak po korak” (Croatia), and Nordic Diaspora Forum (Sweden).
