Sustainable futures through climate education: Teachers at the forefront

KMOP successfully hosted the international conference “Climate Action & Education: Empowering Teachers for a Sustainable Future” on Tuesday, 16 September 2025,  at the Ioniko Centre in Plaka. The event gathered educators, experts, and representatives from Greece and abroad to explore how teachers can actively foster environmental awareness and drive sustainable change.

Rania El Abasy, Senior Project Manager at KMOP, coordinated the conference, welcoming participants and leading discussions that highlighted the central role of education in tackling the climate crisis.

The first session showcased best practices for integrating environmental and climate education into schools. Rania El Abasy, together with Saida Choug, Senior Project Manager at GROUPE SOS Solidarités, presented international examples and strategies designed to inspire and guide teachers in practical ways.

A dynamic panel discussion titled “From Insight to Impact: Initiatives Driving Education for Sustainable Development” followed, in which participants explored ways to translate theory into action. Panel members included Jens Koslowsky (Deutsche Schule Athen), Dr Zuhal Yılmaz Doğan (Doğa Schools), and Marco Piscitelli (ATERMON), highlighting the importance of international cooperation and experience sharing.

The third session featured an interactive workshop, “Climate Change & Education: Where Pathways Meet”, allowing educators to develop ideas and design practical interventions to bring climate education closer to the classroom. Participants shared concerns, proposals, and innovative approaches, demonstrating the capacity of the educational community to act as a catalyst for change.

The fourth session presented success stories and lessons learned from implementing environmental programmes, offering tangible examples of how theory can be transformed into practice. These experiences served as a source of inspiration and reinforced the belief that change is achievable through collaboration.

The conference concluded with the closing session, “Sparks of Inspiration – Promoting Digital Education for Rural Communities”, which showcased the Our Digital Village programme. The session highlighted the value of digital education and the need to support rural communities, equipping students with the skills needed to face future challenges.

Throughout the event, a spirit of collaboration, idea exchange, and constructive dialogue prevailed, underlining the determination of the educational community to play an active role in environmental protection. With this conference, KMOP provided a platform for experts and educators to co-create solutions and chart new paths toward a greener, more sustainable future.
