ACTIVE: Focus on Children; Strengthening Policies in Sports and Leisure ACTIVities

ACTIVE goal is to promote the embedding of child safeguarding policies by sports clubs, as well as leisure and recreational clubs working with children.

Grant Agreement Number: 856826

Funded by: REC        Duration: 01/10/2019-30/09/2021

Challenge

Studies have highlighted the problem of violence that “young athletes” have experienced in the context of sporting activities, and the lack of specific policy measures against this. Actually, 10% of children involved in competitive sports have undergone human rights abuse, and another 20% are at risk. This violence can have negative impact in children well-being. On the contrary, sports promote important values such as tolerance and fair-play and can enhance children’s motor skills, strengthening at the same time their social inclusion and promoting a healthier way of life. Children in order to reap the benefits of sports should be protected against any form of violation  and  practice in safe environments.

Innovation

ACTIVE aims at establishing safer environments for children by developing an online self-assessment tool, allowing sports and leisure clubs to identify and address gaps in terms of implementation of Child Protection Polices in their premises.

Action

A comprehensive assessment will be conducted on Child Protection Policies implemented by sports and leisure organizations. The assessment will be based on interviews and focus groups with relevant stakeholders in order to identify the gaps and best practices.

An online self-assessment tool will be developed to be utilized from sports clubs and leisure organizations to assess their child protection policies, ethic guidelines and code of conduct. The aim of the tool is to assess the competences of the organizations to keep children and young people safe in sports.

Two training workshops for sports professionals will be organized in order to enhance their skills and competences regarding the prevention and combatting of violence to children in the sports and leisure activities environment.

Guidelines will be set up for the creation of multi-agency networks (public authorities/institutions, local authorities, civil society, academia, practitioners etc.) in order to establish safer environments for children involved in sports activities..

Two  National Workshops will be organized with the participation of sports clubs and relevant stakeholders in order to establish cooperation and to identify strengths and weaknesses regarding the implementation of child protection policies.
