DIGINEXT

Sustainable Digital Engagement for Seniors and New Professional Profiles in Resilient Rural Areas

An Erasmus+ initiative that aims to transfer digital skills from higher education institutions to adults residing in rural areas.

GA number: KA220-ADU-000154140

Funded by: Erasmus+      Duration: 01/11/2023-30/04/2026

Challenge

By 2050, 30% of the population will be aged 65 years or older according to the ‘Impact of Democratic Change’ survey, a stark increase from the 20.8% in 2021, while there will be less than 2 workers per elderly person. Rural areas, where many elderly reside, face challenges due to their aging population, limited services, lack of digital skills to adjust to the evolving market and few job opportunities. The digital skills gap among the elderly exacerbates their isolation and hinders their active participation in online initiatives. However, these initiatives hold potential to engage residents in shaping their communities’ future and leveraging their cultural and economic strengths.

Innovation

DIGINEXT aims to exploit European Local Action Groups (LAGs) as an educational bridge for transferring innovative digital skills from Adult and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) to people residing in rural areas.

Action

The project aims to develop, test and promote a new European professional profile of specialists within the wider area of Adult Education. This profile is dedicated to enhancing the digital, critical thinking and communication skills of Seniors in rural areas, by enhancing their digital information access, literacy, social involvement and active belonging to the community.

The aim of the training course is to include adult education in Local Action Groups (LAGs) as a bridge to forward digital skills and competencies to low-skilled adults and seniors in rural areas.  It includes the following topics: information and data literacy; ensuring equal access to (online) goods and services; safety – protecting personal data, privacy, well-being and the environment.

The training materials will be collected in an interactive Toolbox in 6 languages to promote the training contents to the European LEADER network and the European Network for Rural Development.

The pilots aim to provide seniors in rural areas the digital skills to participate in social life and make rural areas more appealing and inclusive. This will be done by concretely implementing intergenerational pedagogy and testing on the ground the circular system between adult education institutions, LAGs, low-skilled adults and seniors. The relevant themes involve the continuous investment on learning; the enhancement of digital skills and initiatives at local and regional level; and a boost for intergenerational community programmes.

A Guideline will be created to share experiences and promote the DIGINEXT approach, positioning LAGs as connectors between adult education and rural regions.
