Gender Equality Plans for INclusivity: engines of Change

An initiative promoting the integration of LGBTIQ and intersectional individuals in Research & Innovation

GA number: 101187961

Funded by: HORIZON     Duration:

Challenge

Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) have fostered equality of opportunity for women in European Research and Innovation Organisations (RIOs), nonetheless, most GEPs to date bypass people who identify themselves as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Non-Binary, Intersex, and Queer (LGBTIQ); often also failing to address the specificities of people combining several minority-group threads (e.g., foreign women, disabled women, migrant women); a phenomenon defined as “intersectionality” by Crenshaw, 1998.

Innovation

GEPINC aims to develop innovative training tools and initiatives designed to enhance the integration of LGBTIQ and intersectional gender groups within European RIOs. The proposed activities will serve as catalysts for change, sustainably advancing gender diversity and inclusion in European R&I, and are expected to create a significant and lasting impact on research performance and attractiveness in the field.

Action

A blueprint for creating inclusive GEPs, consisting of eight modules that specifically address the challenges, needs, and recommendations for removing obstacles to the integration of LGBTIQ individuals and people from intersectional gender backgrounds, while also monitoring progress.

The development and implementation of an Anchoring Vignette raising awareness on lack of inclusion and diversity in RIOs by addressing both explicit and implicit gender biases that impact individual behaviors and create additional obstacles to equal opportunities for LGBTIQ and intersectional gender groups.

A Forum Theatre intervention, based on the popular “Theatre of the Oppressed,” will be created to address the lack of inclusion of LGBTIQ and intersectional gender groups in RIOs. After its implementation in partner countries, a leaflet summarising the experiences of the spectators will be developed as a practical guide for other European RIOs looking to implement this technique.

Profiling and promoting best practices for integrating LGBTIQ individuals and those from diverse gender minority groups in European RIOs, building on the results and tools developed and validated in GEPINC, while actively involving multiple stakeholders and practitioners.
