Artificial Intelligence in Creative Writing

An initiative exploring how AI can increase digital literacy and self-expression in adult education

Challenge

Generative AI, as opposed to discriminative (or traditional) AI, gained prominence starting in 2020 when OpenAI introduced its Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), capable of processing and generating new text. This technology, often described as disruptive, has the potential to significantly transform the way we learn and work.

Large language models like ChatGPT represent the latest advancements in a 70-year history of creative writing using computer algorithms. Since the 1950s, practitioners have explored computation as a medium that enhances, challenges, and transforms creative writing practices (Rettberg, 2019).

While some pessimistic voices predict that AI will replace human creativity and judgment, render many workers redundant, and foster new dependencies, wrAIte adopts a more optimistic perspective. It explores how AI can enhance learning opportunities and empower individuals to express themselves more effectively in a world where 90% of professional roles require at least basic digital knowledge, yet 42% of Europeans lack fundamental digital skills.

Innovation

wrAIte addresses one the most exciting and at the same time pressing aspects of digital transformation: the emergence of generative AI and how we can engage with it in beneficial ways. wrAIte explores the opportunities and limitations of AI in adult education, equipping learners with the knowledge and skills to utilise digital tools and GenAI in creative writing and strengthen their capacity of self-expression, digital competence and creative powers.

Action

A concise publication for trainers and adult educators explores AI’s role in creative writing within adult education. It highlights digital potential, ethical and pedagogical dimensions, and limitations while offering best practice examples of AI-assisted creative writing for formal and non-formal learning contexts.

A modular micro-learning course equipping trainers and adult educators with essential skills to plan, organize, facilitate, and evaluate digital and AI-assisted creative writing processes in adult education.

A platform that features an AI-supported online learning environment, functioning as a resource center, training academy, testbed, and showcase for digital and AI-assisted creative writing processes in adult education.
