Challenge

Human trafficking for sexual exploitation is a serious problem across Europe. In 2022 alone, more than 10,000 victims were officially identified, although the real number is likely much higher. Women and girls make up two out of three victims, and many are migrants who face multiple layers of vulnerability. Yet, in many countries there are no clear procedures to identify victims, and frontline professionals often lack the training to respond effectively. At the same time, safe spaces and support services are not equally available, leaving many survivors without the protection and care they urgently need.

Innovation

The SIS-Hubs project focuses on the social integration of women and girls who are victims/survivors of trafficking (VoTs) or those at risks. At the core of the initiative is the establishment of community hubs, which provide access to services, raise awareness about trafficking in human beings and exploitation, and equip them with tools to prevent re-trafficking.

Action

Five visual maps showing all the available local and regional services (healthcare, education, legal support, social services). These maps will help women and girls, as well as professionals, understand what support exists and how different services are connected.

A training programme organised into 4 thematic clusters: health, legal, social and educational sectors focused on prevention-oriented measures will be created and made available for teachers, social workers, doctors, and other professionals, giving them the knowledge and tools to better support women and girls who are victims or at risk of trafficking and violence.

A practical training for women mentors (the SIS-ter groups) to help them guide, support, and raise awareness among their peers on issues such as gender-based violence and trafficking. It will cover some key topics such as:

    • GBV
    • THB for sexual exploitation purposes
    • Intersectionality & multiculturality
    • Rights-based approach
    • Principles of community-led actions and mentorship methodologies

A step-by-step guide on how to set up and run a SIS-Hub, including staff needs, space requirements, services offered, and methods to support women and girls effectively.

An evaluation report showing what worked well in each country, lessons learned, and real-life stories from women who took part, to help improve and replicate the model in the future.

A film capturing the experiences and voices of women involved in the SIS-Hubs, sharing their stories and showing the changes these safe spaces have brought to their lives and communities.

A set of practical recommendations for decision-makers on how to keep SIS-Hubs sustainable, expand the model, and ensure long-term support for women and girls at risk.
