Challenge

Cultural heritage interpretation remains largely expert-driven, limiting public participation and reinforcing a democratic deficit in the sector. This exclusion weakens citizens’ sense of ownership, connection, and resilience, particularly in relation to archaeological heritage, which is often perceived as elitist. The lack of inclusive engagement undermines social cohesion and emotional well-being. Addressing this gap is critical to fostering more democratic, empathetic, and transformative cultural experiences that reflect diverse voices and strengthen community identity.

Innovation

The META-MUSEUM project introduces the “TransforMeans theory”—a new approach that helps museums connect with visitors in a more meaningful and emotional way. To test this approach, the project runs pilot activities that use real-time emotional feedback to understand how people feel during their museum experience.

Using tools like the “attaCHbox” mobile app and sensory-based technologies, META-MUSEUM turns traditional, passive museum visits into interactive and emotionally engaging experiences. These tools aim to build visitors’ confidence, support their emotional resilience, and strengthen their sense of belonging. The ultimate goal is to help everyone—especially those often excluded—feel more connected to cultural heritage and empowered to interpret it in their own way.
