PATHWAYS

Building pathways for empowering secondary school
students to become agents of change for environmental and
climate action

An initiative promoting innovative environmental and climate change education in schools

GA number: 2023-1-FR01-KA220-SCH-000153897

Funded by: Erasmus+      Duration: 30/09/2023-29/09/2025

Challenge

Although the damaging effects of climate change are being felt worldwide and are expected to intensify in the coming decades, environmental and climate change education remains insufficiently integrated into the education system.

According to the School Education Getaway, only 4% of students feel they know a lot about climate change; 42% believe they have learned a little to nothing about it at school; and 57% are interested in learning more. This highlights the need for a more cross-curricular, competency-based approach in delivering environmental and climate change education that fosters critical thinking and civic activism.

Innovation

PATHWAYS aims to empower secondary school students to become agents of change for environmental and climate action by supporting the ongoing training of teachers and school leaders in environmental sustainability, fostering civic engagement within school communities, and promoting translational exchange of good practices.

By championing innovative experiential and project-based methods over teacher-based learning, PATHWAYS stimulates students’ problem-solving abilities and inspires them to take action.

Action

An e-learning course equipping teachers with the skills and confidence to deliver environmental and climate change education across a range of disciplines, including science, ethics, sociology, literature, economics, culture, and arts. The course employs experiential learning approaches and features a series of mini virtual escape rooms for secondary school students to play online.

A handbook designed to support teachers, school leaders, and students in bringing their learning to life by planning and implementing environmental and climate change initiatives within their school community and beyond.

An online platform where students and teachers exchange their experiences, best practices, and lessons learned in integrating environmental sustainability into their teaching and in designing environmental and climate change initiatives. This platform is designed to stimulate peer learning and inspires other schools and communities to take action.
