A holistic approach to supporting the integration and language learning of migrant children and their parents

GA number: 101141033

Funded by: AMIF     Duration: 01/11/2024 – 30/04/2027

Challenge

According to the Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021-2027, over 34 million foreigners currently live in the EU, most of whom come from Muslim-majority countries. Additionally, 7.8 million Ukrainian refugees have been recorded in Europe since February 2022.

Despite significant efforts by the European Commission and EU Member States, the Action Plan highlights that persisting challenges in relation to employment, education, access to basic services and to the social inclusion of migrants demonstrate that additional action is needed. The Action Plan further states that schools have the potential to become true hubs of integration for children and their families by engaging communities, support services, and parents. This approach can enhance academic performance, reduce school drop-out rates, and foster future professional success.

Innovation

The SCHOOLinHUB iniviative aims to support the integration and language learning of children aged 4-7 years with migrant backgrounds (refugees, migrants, or asylum seekers) in their host country by developing a whole-school approach, whereby each school will create an action plan involving the local community, parents, and migrant families.

Action

The toolkit provides students and educators with digital tools and innovative content to enhance language, personal, social, and civic skills for children with migrant background. It includes a Competence Framework, Social Stories with accompanying interactive activities, a 2D Serious Game, a Mobile App, and a Web Portal. The toolkit features an animated ‘Buddy’ guiding children through the materials to facilitate language acquisition and integration into the host country.

The First Aid Pack consists of guidelines for adult educators and policy recommendations for local stakeholders to promote community-based formal and non-formal language learning and civic engagement activities, facilitating the successful integration of migrant families into local communities. Additionally, it includes a repository of non-formal learning activities and blended mobility training for educators.

The implementation of SCHOOLinHUB within local communities features integration and language learning activities for children, language upskilling workshops for migrant parents, capacity-building workshops for educators and stakeholders, as well as open integration sessions (through art, culture, and sports) to bring native and migrant families closer together.
