KMOP discussed preliminary findings from its study on nature-based interventions (NBIs) at the 2nd International Workshop of the EU-funded NATURELAB project, held in Peru from 12 to 16 October. The workshop took place at Colegio Médico del Perú alongside the project’s 3rd Consortium Meeting.

The meetings brought together project partners to exchange knowledge and discuss the development and validation of Nature-Based Interventions (NBIs), as well as their potential integration into national healthcare systems to support primary and secondary disease prevention.

Encouraging initial findings on nature-based interventions and mental health

During the workshop, KMOP presented the first findings from a three-month quasi-experimental study exploring how structured nature-based interventions can support the health and well-being of residents of psychosocial rehabilitation facilities living with severe mental health conditions.

The initial findings point to promising potential:

  • Consistent engagement: Participants demonstrated consistent participation and attendance across most NBI activities.
  • Improved mood and well-being: Positive changes were observed, including in sessions adapted to participants’ individual needs and circumstances.
  • Stronger social connections: Group activities helped foster interaction and strengthen bonds among participants.

From research findings to policy recommendations

Beyond sharing these initial findings, KMOP actively contributed to discussions on the development and validation of NBIs and the policy measures needed to facilitate their integration into healthcare systems.

As the partner responsible for the deliverable “Operational Policy Recommendations,” KMOP is working towards translating the evidence emerging from the project into practical recommendations for policymakers.

The deliverable includes a policy brief outlining recommendations based on the results achieved so far, with the aim of supporting the integration of NBIs into healthcare and strengthening prevention efforts.

KMOP was represented in Peru by Dr Vasileios Margaritis, Senior Researcher, with the support of Jenny Lazarou, Project Manager, who contributes to the coordination and implementation of project activities on behalf of KMOP.

We extend our sincere thanks to all project partners and everyone involved in this research, especially the participants and the KMOP professionals and NBI facilitators whose commitment makes this work possible.

Through its participation in NATURELAB, KMOP continues to contribute to evidence-informed policymaking and the exploration of innovative, nature-based approaches to promote mental health, well-being, and disease prevention.
