KMOP helps schools in Belgium make sustainability part of everyday learning

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising social inequalities are transforming both our environment and our societies. Responding to these challenges takes more than awareness — it requires skills and attitudes that foster empathy, responsibility, and care for people and the planet. But where can young people best develop these competences? In schools, which have the unique power to shape how students learn, think, and act, equipping them to live and contribute toward a more sustainable future.

To address this need, KMOP joins forces with 6 European organizations to help schools act in a more sustainable manner by offering tools and support that bring real change within and beyond the classroom. At the core of this initiative, titled “GATE”, is the  GreenComp framework for sustainability learning, which identifies the key competences students need for a greener future. Based on GreenComp, KMOP will develop a training programme for teachers and policymakers. The programme will include modules on GreenComp competences, the Whole School Approach to Sustainability, theoretical and practical tools for school self-evaluation, and hands-on practices across five areas of sustainability. In addition, transnational workshops will prepare selected professionals to deliver the programme more widely. Alongside this, a self-assessment tool will be created to help students, educators, and schools evaluate their own sustainability competences using GreenComp.

Are you a dedicated teacher, school leader, or education professional interested in making your school more sustainable?

KMOP is inviting educators in Brussels to take part in a focus group to reflect on their school’s experiences, needs, and practices across the five axes of sustainability in schools: governance and leadership, curriculum and teaching methods, professional development of educators, campus operations and facilities, and engagement with families and the local community. The insights shared will directly contribute to the development of practical tools and key findings that highlight good practices, challenges, and lessons learned. If you are passionate, join us either on 18 or 19 September, and register here.

Through GATE, KMOP reinforces its mission to support schools and communities in building a greener and fairer society where education does not just inform, but also empowers the next generation to act for lasting change.
