Promoting ethical and inclusive data collection in the era of Artificial Intelligence

As the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools continues to grow, so does the risk of bias and discrimination in how data is collected, analysed, and used. Promoting ethical and inclusive data practices is more critical than ever.

To this end, KMOP participated on 9 July in a high-level workshop and partner meeting in Italy, focused on sharing practices and building tools that help public institutions and professionals work with data in fair and responsible ways. The event brought together experts from the fields of justice, law enforcement, civil society, academia, and public administration.

Co-organised by the Court of Appeal of Venice (IT) and the AGENFOR International Foundation (IT) , the workshop featured key discussions around:

  • Ethical data collection and management
  • Data analysis and exchange between institutions
  • Addressing bias in AI and digital monitoring tools
  • Good practices from different European countries

Over the next two years, KMOP, in collaboration with 8 organisations, will be working to:

  • Release a Report on Equality Data Collection. The report uncovers common challenges, identifies critical gaps, and shares best practices, including the use of AI and OSINT to mitigate bias in data processing.
  • Develop a European Handbook on Equality Data. It presents a clear, step-by-step methodology for CSOs and LEAs to collect and manage discrimination data effectively.
  • Implement capacity-building activities for members of CSOs and LEAs/Judicial bodies. These hands-on training sessions aims to empower professionals in detecting and combating data-driven discrimination.

The event took place within the framework of the DATA EQUALITY project.
