Περίπου 25 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι παγκοσμίως εκτιμάται ότι είναι παγιδευμένοι σήμερα στα δίχτυα κυκλωμάτων εμπορίας (trafficking), σύμφωνα με τη Διεθνή Οργάνωση Εργασίας του ΟΗΕ (ILO). Το 71% αυτών είναι γυναίκες. Στην Ελλάδα, το 2019 καταγράφηκαν 154 περιπτώσεις trafficking, εκ των οποίων οι 120 αφορούσαν γυναίκες και κορίτσια, όπως προκύπτει από τα στοιχεία του Εθνικού Μηχανισμού Αναφοράς (Ε.Μ.Α.) για την προστασία των θυμάτων εμπορίας
